It has been about a year since BMW introduced the electric i7. Today, the automaker is unveiling the powerful version i7 M70 xDrive. It will be manufactured at the Dingolfing plant in Germany, with the global market launch scheduled for the second half of 2023. The sedan made its debut at the International Motor Show in Shanghai.
The new i7 M70 xDrive features the most powerful electric motor of BMW. The company increased the power density of the motor on the rear axle by 25.5 percent compared to the unit in the i7 xDrive60. The increase in power comes from doubling the number of exciter windings in the electric motor from three to six. The rear produces 483 horsepower, which works with the front axle motor with a power of 255 hp to provide the electric vehicle with a combined power of 650 hp and all-wheel drive.
The powertrain also produces 1015 Nm of torque in sport mode. The electric sedan can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, making it the fastest fully electric model of the brand. The automaker electronically limits the top speed to 250 km/h.
The battery of the i7 M70 xDrive provides 101.7 kilowatt-hours of usable energy from its capacity of 105.7 kilowatt-hours. This gives the EV an approximate range of up to 295 miles based on the US EPA test procedure standards.
To maximize range in emergency situations, the i7 M70 comes with the new Max Range mode from BMW, which limits the vehicle's top speed to 56 mph and restricts comfort functions such as climate control and heated seats, which helps stretch the remaining electrons.
BMW will offer the i7 M70 xDrive with its M-exclusive exterior colors and Frozen matte finish. The company will also offer two-tone finishes, and at launch there will be a combination of BMW Individual Liquid Copper and Sapphire Black.
