The first hybrid Porsche 911 debuts on 28 May

On 28 May, a new chapter begins for the Porsche 911. Porscheis set to present its first-ever road-going 911 hybrid, a move that propels the legendary sports car into the future with a blend of tradition and innovation.

For more than two years, we have seen glimpses of the 911 hybrid in its prototype. Now Porsche confirms that the development phase is complete, with the hybrid model having racked up an impressive 3.1 million miles during testing.

A significant portion of these tests took place at the Nürburgring, offering us a tantalizing glimpse into the car’s performance capabilities. The hybrid 911 is reported to lap the iconic Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 16.9 seconds, which is 8.7 seconds faster than the previous comparable model.

Some simple arithmetic points to a lap time of 7:25.6 for the predecessor, which equates to the 992-generation Carrera S, which recorded a lap time of 7:25 in 2020. Porsche is mum on specific details, but the lack of extreme bodywork hints at a more refined model. This suggests that a Carrera S with hybrid power could be the car in question.

“For the first time in our icon’s 61-year history, we install a hybrid powertrain in a road-going 911“, said Frank Moser, Vice President of Porsche for 911 and 718. “This performance-oriented hybrid makes the 911 even more dynamic. We left nothing to chance during development and tested the new 911 under all conditions around the world, from freezing cold to scorching heat, as was the case during the final stages of testing in Dubai.

Although details of the hybrid powertrain remain under wraps, Porsche stated that the focus is on performance rather than efficiency. Importantly, it will not be a plug-in hybrid. The 7:16 Nürburgring lap time is a clear indicator that the hybrid 911 will be extremely fast, retaining the brand’s renowned ability to cut precise corners.
