The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team has officially unveiled its long-awaited 2025 challenger, the W16. This launch marks a key moment for the Silver Arrows as they seek to bounce back from an inconsistent 2024 campaign and re-establish themselves among the front-runners.
AlthoughMercedes showed its 2025 liveryduring the F175 event last week in London, this was done on a car from the previous generation. Today’s unveiling presents the actual 2025 chassis in its full launch specification — which will be driven this season by George Russell and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Clean slate after ground effect struggles
The W16 represents a fundamental reset in Mercedes’ design philosophy. Since Formula 1 introduced ground effect regulations in 2022, Mercedes has faced constant challenges in achieving a consistent setup window. The W13 to W15 models often swung between flashes of brilliance and confusion, with their performance varying drastically from track to track.
The 2024 season saw Russell and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton secure two race wins apiece — including a commanding one-two finish under the lights in Las Vegas. However, these highs were offset by frequent issues with handling, tyre balance, and aerodynamic inconsistencies, leading the team to a disappointing fourth place in theconstructors’ championship — behind Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren.
New era, new line-up
With the high-profile move of Hamilton to Ferrari, George Russell steps into the role of team leader. Alongside him is 18-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli — one of Mercedes’ most celebrated juniors. Antonelli, who is rapidly rising through the ranks after dominating the junior formulas, will become the youngest driver in the team’s history.
“This year will be a significant change,” Russell noted. "In the past, we often thought we had solved one problem, only to discover another. This time, we are much more disciplined and data-driven with every change."
He stressed that work in the simulator and virtual development is stricter than ever, ensuring that the W16 will not fall into the same trap of unpredictable performance.
All-new Aero and suspension for 2025
According to Mercedes, almost every aerodynamic surface on the W16 has been redesigned. From the front wing to the diffuser, the goal was clear — to optimise airflow and create a more stable and adaptable platform. The car also features a newly designed front suspension system aimed at improving turn-in response, especially in slower corners.
Technical Director James Allison highlighted the team’s focus: “Our priority was to eliminate the W15’s snap oversteer in tight corners and correct the tyre temperature imbalance that made the car unpredictable in sessions.”
Mercedes will debut the W16 on track during a filming day at the Bahrain International Circuit on Tuesday, offering the first real look at the car in motion. Full pre-season testing will take place at the same venue from 26 to 28 February.
